Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd has been awarded the Special Recognition Award at the PIKOM LEAD 2024 Summit, celebrating its significant role in Malaysia’s digital evolution. This acknowledgment highlights Huawei Malaysia’s sustained efforts to foster innovation, collaborate with local partners, and contribute to the growth of a vibrant tech ecosystem in the country.

The recognition was presented by YB Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysia’s Digital Minister, to Mr. Oliver Liu, Vice President of Huawei Malaysia’s Public Affairs and Communications Department, during the summit. The event also marked the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations, underscoring the deepening ties between the two countries, particularly in the technology sector.

Huawei Malaysia has been an instrumental player in advancing Malaysia’s digital transformation over the past two decades. The company has been a key contributor to the development of high-tech infrastructure, 5G networks, smart cities, and digital talent in Malaysia. Huawei’s initiatives align with the Malaysian government’s goal of becoming the ASEAN Digital Capital and enhancing the country’s position as a leader in digital innovation within the region.

PIKOM Chairman, Mr. Ong Chin Seong, praised Huawei for its deep engagement with Malaysia’s tech ecosystem. “Huawei’s long-standing commitment to building local partnerships, coupled with its collaborative efforts with government bodies, universities, and industry leaders, has been crucial in the country’s digital journey. Huawei’s support for various initiatives like the Digital Leadership Excellence programme further demonstrates its dedication to shaping Malaysia’s future in technology,” he said.

Huawei Malaysia places significant emphasis on the development of local talent, aligning with Malaysia’s aim to cultivate a knowledge-based economy. Through initiatives such as the Huawei ASEAN Academy and Huawei ICT Academies in local universities, Huawei has helped train thousands of individuals in emerging digital technologies. This ongoing effort addresses Malaysia’s need for a skilled workforce in critical areas such as 5G, AI, and cybersecurity.

The company has also contributed to job creation in Malaysia. With nearly 4,000 employees, 80% of whom are Malaysians, Huawei is dedicated to local employment and skills development. The company’s Cyberjaya-based Malaysia Global Training Centre is a key component in its talent development strategy and is the only global training facility Huawei has outside of China.

Huawei’s contributions extend beyond urban centres, with a strong focus on providing underserved communities with the digital tools they need to thrive. Through key initiatives like the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) and the Sarawak government’s telecommunication tower project, Huawei has played an essential role in enhancing connectivity across Malaysia. These projects are vital in ensuring that rural and remote areas benefit from high-speed internet and digital services, which are crucial for education, business, and government access.

By increasing access to digital infrastructure, Huawei is helping bridge the digital divide, ensuring that the full potential of digital transformation is realized nationwide.

Speaking after receiving the award, Mr. Oliver Liu expressed Huawei Malaysia’s unwavering commitment to continuing its support for the nation’s digital ambitions. “This recognition from PIKOM motivates us to continue working closely with our local partners to foster an innovation-driven ecosystem. Huawei remains dedicated to creating new opportunities and supporting Malaysia’s digital transformation,” he said.

Huawei’s ongoing investment in digital infrastructure and talent development plays a crucial role in positioning Malaysia as a global digital leader. The company’s contributions in areas such as 5G, smart city development, and green technology underscore its commitment to sustainable digital growth in Malaysia.

As Malaysia progresses with its digital transformation plans, Huawei Malaysia remains a trusted partner in driving innovation and building the necessary infrastructure for future growth. Through its strong collaborations with government bodies, educational institutions, and the private sector, Huawei continues to play a key role in shaping the future of Malaysia’s digital landscape.

The recognition by PIKOM is a testament to Huawei Malaysia’s long-term impact on the country’s tech ecosystem and reinforces its ongoing commitment to supporting Malaysia’s aspirations as a digital leader in ASEAN.
