Samsung Galaxy S25 Series: Leading the Charge in Sustainability and Innovation

As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, Samsung is setting new standards for how mobile technology can contribute to environmental conservation and social responsibility. At the recently held Galaxy Tech Forum on January 23, 2025, the company unveiled its vision for a more sustainable mobile industry. The announcement of the highly anticipated Galaxy S25 series marks a pivotal moment in Samsung’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, blending cutting-edge technology with environmentally responsible practices.

Samsung’s Bold Commitment to Sustainability

At the core of Samsung’s strategy is a focus on creating mobile devices that prioritize environmental responsibility without compromising on performance. Daniel Araujo, Head of Sustainability Management at Samsung Electronics, spoke about the company’s efforts to make sustainability a key part of its mobile product lifecycle. For the first time, the Galaxy S25 series will feature batteries made with recycled cobalt sourced from used Galaxy smartphones. This initiative is part of Samsung’s broader efforts to minimize the environmental impact of its products and promote circularity in mobile technology.

The integration of recycled materials in the S25 series doesn’t end with the battery. Samsung continues to incorporate ocean-bound plastic into its devices, an initiative that began with the Galaxy S22 series. Over 150 tonnes of discarded fishing nets—equivalent to 15 million plastic water bottles—have been repurposed into Galaxy products, helping to reduce the harmful effects of ocean pollution. This commitment to using recycled materials demonstrates Samsung’s leadership in creating mobile devices that contribute to a more sustainable future.

Ocean Conservation: Samsung’s Partnership with Seatrees

Samsung’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond its products to real-world environmental efforts. The company has partnered with Seatrees, a non-profit organization focused on coral reef restoration, to leverage mobile technology for marine conservation. The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s new Ocean Mode camera setting plays a key role in this initiative, optimizing underwater photography to capture detailed imagery of coral reefs. These images are then used to create 3D maps of the reefs, aiding in the restoration and preservation of vital marine ecosystems.

As Dr. Stuart Sandin from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography emphasized, coral reefs are essential to marine biodiversity and the protection of coastal communities. With over half of the world’s coral reefs already lost, Samsung’s innovative approach to using mobile technology for reef restoration is a significant step towards addressing this environmental crisis.

Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

In addition to its environmental efforts, Samsung is equally focused on empowering young leaders who are working to create a more sustainable and equitable world. Through its collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Samsung has launched the Samsung Global Goals app and the Generation17 initiative. These programs provide young leaders with the resources, mentorship, and platform to make a global impact.

Tamara Gondo, CEO of Liberty Society and a Generation17 Young Leader, shared her experience in using the initiative to grow her social enterprise, which focuses on upskilling marginalized women. She highlighted how the Generation17 platform has provided her with access to key decision-making forums, including the Mobile World Congress and the United Nations General Assembly, empowering her to drive positive change on a global scale.

Samsung’s dedication to supporting young innovators reflects the company’s belief in the power of collaboration to tackle global challenges. By offering a platform for young leaders to bring their ideas to life, Samsung is fostering a new generation of change-makers who are committed to building a more sustainable future.
