Sony has just revealed the latest addition to its CineAlta lineup, the VENICE Extension System Mini (CBK-3621XS), a groundbreaking accessory designed for the award-winning VENICE 2 digital cinema camera. This new system is built to offer filmmakers more creative freedom, packing the power of the VENICE 2’s 8K sensor into a compact design that’s approximately 70% smaller than its predecessor. With a footprint the size of a smartphone, the VENICE Extension System Mini opens up new possibilities for handheld shots, extreme action sequences, and a range of challenging filming environments.
Renowned Director of Photography Claudio Miranda ASC, one of the first to use the system, shares his excitement: “I love the size of the VENICE Extension System Mini. You can put it anywhere, even inside a Formula 1 race car, and still capture the full resolution of a real cinema camera. It gives you all the flexibility you need without sacrificing image quality.”
Building on the success of the previous extension system, the VENICE Extension System Mini enhances the filmmaking process with features like a custom drop-in ND cartridge system, which includes nine glass ND filters—ensuring perfect match and quality while maintaining its compact size. The system also features a flexible, detachable cable and improved mounting points for quick rigging and accessory attachments, offering filmmakers even more ease in creating their next masterpiece.
The system’s capabilities extend to innovative filmmaking techniques like stereoscopic imaging, where multiple units can be used side-by-side to capture 3D footage, mimicking the natural human eye’s 64mm interpupillary distance. It’s also ideal for creating VR content and VFX plates, opening up new doors for creators across various mediums.
Since its debut, Sony’s VENICE series has been adopted by top filmmakers worldwide, including the creators of blockbusters such as Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, and more recently, Nickel Boys and The Fire Inside. With the VENICE Extension System Mini, Sony continues to lead the way in cutting-edge filmmaking technology, empowering creators to achieve their artistic visions with unparalleled quality and flexibility.
The VENICE Extension System Mini (CBK-3621XS) will be showcased at the NAB Show 2025 in Las Vegas, opening April 6, 2025. It will be available in Malaysia starting Q3 2025.
